Rats, Cockroaches & Expired Food: FDA Suspends 6 Mumbai Eateries

Mumbai: In a major food safety enforcement drive, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended the licences of six food establishments in Mumbai after inspections revealed serious hygiene and food safety violations. The inspections, conducted between June 26 and June 28 under the direction of Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, uncovered alarming issues including rat infestation, cockroach presence, expired food products, foul odour, leaking refrigerators, and poor sanitation practices.

Among the establishments facing action were Flint & Waarsa at Nariman Point, M.K. Bakery in Borivali East, Hotel Shree Krishna in Bhandup West, Hotel Gopal Krishna in Santacruz East, Karak Enterprises Pvt Ltd in Andheri East, and Madras Diaries in Bandra West. Violations included misbranded products, unhygienic food preparation during renovation, poor facility maintenance, lack of pest control, and failure to maintain mandatory compliance records.

Apart from the restaurant inspections, the FDA also conducted 31 raids across Maharashtra targeting banned products such as pan masala and gutkha. Authorities seized illegal products worth ₹34.87 lakh, arrested 19 individuals, sealed one establishment, and confiscated three vehicles. The crackdown highlights increasing regulatory focus on food safety, hygiene compliance, and consumer protection across India’s food sector.
