FSSAI Issues Notices to Heritage Foods, DIA Foods and Cipzer Over 'Fresh Paneer', '100% Organic', 'Natural', 'Vegan' and 'FSSAI Approved' Claims
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has intensified its action against misleading food labelling and advertising by issuing fresh notices to several food brands. The latest enforcement is part of the regulator's ongoing nationwide drive to ensure that food businesses make only truthful, scientifically substantiated, and legally compliant claims on product labels and promotional materials. The move reflects FSSAI's continued focus on protecting consumer interests and improving transparency in the food sector.
Among the brands that have come under regulatory scrutiny are Heritage Foods Limited, for claims related to its "Fresh Paneer" products, DIA Foods, for marketing statements such as "100% Organic," "Natural," and "Vegan," and Cipzer, for using the term "FSSAI Approved" along with certain health-related claims. FSSAI has consistently maintained that businesses must not use expressions suggesting official approval or make health and quality claims without adequate scientific evidence and regulatory compliance.
The regulator has also expanded its review to products carrying terms such as "Healthy," "Organic," "Natural," "Pure," and "Zero Maida," where such claims may have the potential to mislead consumers. Food businesses are advised to carefully review their product labels, advertisements, and digital marketing content to ensure compliance with the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018. The latest notices serve as a reminder that inaccurate or unsubstantiated claims can attract regulatory action and reinforce the importance of responsible marketing practices across the food industry.
