FSSAI Issues Notices to 6 Energy Drink Brands, Including Red Bull, Sting and PepsiCo, Over Misleading Claims
According to the food safety regulator, the brands under scrutiny include Red Bull Energy Drink, PepsiCo’s Adrenaline Rush Energy Drink, Reliance Consumer Products’ Campa Energy Drink Gold Boost, Sting Energy Drink, Hell Energy, and Coca-Cola-backed Monster Energy.FSSAI stated that these brands were using promotional claims and product labeling that may mislead consumers by implying functional or health benefits not permitted under Indian food regulations. The regulator has raised concerns over terms such as “energy boost,” “improves focus,” and similar claims used in branding and marketing.
Energy drinks typically contain high levels of caffeine, sugar, taurine, vitamins, and other stimulants designed to provide temporary alertness and reduce fatigue. While moderate consumption may help improve focus and energy levels for a short duration, excessive intake can pose health risks.Health experts warn that frequent consumption of energy drinks may lead to increased heart rate, high blood pressure, anxiety, sleep disturbances, dehydration, and sugar-related health complications. The risks can be higher for children, teenagers, and individuals with underlying health conditions.
FSSAI’s action highlights increasing regulatory focus on consumer safety, food labeling transparency, and stricter control over misleading health-related claims in India’s rapidly growing beverage market. The latest development serves as a reminder for consumers to carefully check product labels, understand ingredients, and consume such beverages responsibly.
